New Web Infrastructure

Our own website is becoming more and more popular, with the number of visits increasing each and every month. With the increase in traffic we have decided to utilise high-end hardware for both web layer and database layer of our infrastructure. As a hardware selection for the web layer we have decided on Dell 710 servers (Dell 710, 2x Quad Core Xeon X5677 @ 3.47GHz, 16GB Dual Rank RDIMM 1333MHz, PERC H700/i 512MB Cache, 6x 146GB 15k RPM SAS disks), with the database layer pretty much the same.

In terms of Operating System we agreed on 64bit version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6, which we have been working on since it was released. It comes with everything what we needed to run our Joomla based website including recent technology/software: Apache 2.2.15, MySQL 5.1.52 and PHP 5.3.2.

By upgrading hardware to a high end level we have managed to reduce speed of homepage serving to 40ms. This impressive performance is a result of top level hardware, well optimised Red Hat operating system along with proper use of various caching technologies.
